Gratitude during the Christmas season, and excited for the future Ryan Welton, December 21, 2024December 21, 2024 I’ll address the elephant in the room. I’ve posted to this site exactly seven times thus far in 2024. For a digital dude such as myself, that’s way too little. And I know that. So I quit my job. Well, that’s not why. That’s not the cause and effect or, well, that’s not why. Instead, I decided to leave Griffin Media after 7.5 years to start my own business, called Doable Digital Media. I believe a next-generation media revolution is upon us. It involves primarily newsletters, podcasts, YouTube and vertical video — and I think it will be driven by AI processes, a veritable supply chain for content. And I think there’s big opportunity. Besides, I just finished my master’s this year in Digital Audience Strategy from Arizona State University (yes, go Sun Devils!), and I turned 54. I feel very young, and I operate in a younger person’s world. I know that, but I was here first. Respectfully. Working in digital, working in social. My hunch is that betting on myself and my timing for doing so could not be better. The credit for feeling comfortable with that is mostly my wife’s, who provides me with the support to give this a shot without fear of shame or even failure. The competitive advantage people have when they have an amazing spouse is unmatched. It’s an advantage in all parts of life. And for that I’m grateful. So, I’m going to enjoy Christmas a little extra this year. In Charlotte, North Carolina. Love the Carolinas, and I love that we’re getting to spend the holidays with family. I even love that it’s going to be really cold! Anyway… after 7.5 years of being tethered to the news cycle, after 8 years of doing it previously (2005-2013), my days of not enjoying a good thunderstorm or winter blast are over. My passion for journalism is still very strong, and I am determined to put my skills to work to make the business of communications and journalism stronger and more profitable than ever. This space will still be filled with randomness, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I hope you’ll stick around for what should be an interesting and fun ride in ’25. Merry Christmas!
