Supporting creators is good for the spirit and soul. Ryan Welton, January 4, 2024January 4, 2024 I’m genuinely trying to do things differently this year. I’m not talking about a resolution; I’m talking about a revolution or, more precisely, an evolution of the mind, spirit, body, and soul. Although not nearly as drastic as it sounds. As I get older, and unfortunately, I do by the day — I am filled with discontentment sometimes over the stupid stuff I buy. Or subscribe to. Is it edifying my existence? If not, why do it? The body is the easiest element to knock out: My right hip is all sorts of jacked right now, the result of poor form on a leg press at the gym I’m led to believe. It takes me back to my really bad back pain days. It’s not degeneration, my wonderful chiropractor informs me. It’s rotation. I walk forward, while my hip is tilted to the right. I’m headed north; it’s headed northeast. There’s a lot of pain and discomfort with this, and mostly, I’d like normalcy to return as quickly as possible. Cool? Cool. The mind part of the equation is focused on continual learning and my graduate degree, which is supposed to be completed by May. It’s also, however, focused on reading and eventually on some language learning I’d like to do. I have a pretty good base of French and Spanish. I’d like to really get strong there and then move on to Russian and Chinese. The spirit and soul elements are mostly about creativity, both the consumption of it and the output of it. Like many of you, I’ve started taking to Patreon to support creators and artists who bring me joy and peace. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money, but I think it’s important for there to be some exchange of value happening. Ways to Support Individual Creators Here are a few practical ways to champion the work of folks you enjoy: Purchase Their Work: Whether it’s music, books, art prints, or any other form of creation, purchasing the work of individual creators directly contributes to their livelihood. Consider buying from independent online platforms or attending local events to support them. Spread the Word: Share the work of your favorite creators on social media, blogs, or other platforms. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and your recommendation can introduce new audiences to the talent of individual creators. Attend Events and Shows: Many independent artists and creators showcase their work at events, markets, or performances. Attend these shows to not only enjoy their creations firsthand but also to provide them with a direct source of income. Engage with Them: Follow and engage with individual creators on social media. Leave comments, share your thoughts, and participate in discussions. This not only boosts their online presence but also creates a sense of community around their work. Support Crowdfunding Campaigns: Many creators turn to crowdfunding platforms to fund their projects. Consider contributing to campaigns that align with your interests and values, helping these creators bring their visions to life. And that could be a simple $5 per month Patreon contribution. The cost of a cup of coffee. It’ll change your life to invest in 2-3 creators, even at a small level. It’s a big deal.
